Buckled (Trails of Sin, book #2) by Pam Godwin
Genre → Contemporary Romance
Theme → Dark, brooding, kinky, lawless cowboys
Series → Each book is an HEA with no cliffhanger. Must be read in order.
I protect what’s mine.
The ranch, my family, our buried secrets.
Nothing will stop me from reassembling the life that went terribly wrong.
Not the law.
Not our enemies.
Not even Maybe Quinn.
The gorgeous, quarrelsome journalist shouldn’t have meddled.
I shouldn’t have let her stay.
But she’s hiding something in those deceptive blue eyes.
Something deeper than her thirst for a news story.
I make a deal with her to buy time.
To unravel her lies. To play with her. To satisfy my darker appetites.
When she buckles beneath my belt, I’ll send her away.
Unless I buckle first.

Julep Ranch has an ugly past and dirty secrets that Jarret will do anything to keep buried. So, when Maybe Quinn comes sniffing around asking dangerous questions, Jarret assures his twin brother Jake he’s got this. Protecting the ranch, Conor, and their secrets are paramount.
But Julep Ranch isn’t the only one with secrets. It’s clear there is more to Maybe than meets the eye. She’s hiding something and he needs to get her to trust him enough to find out if the secrets she’s hiding make her a threat to the ranch and his family. It doesn’t hurt that his attraction to her burns hotter than the mid-day sun, either; especially when his plan to get to her trust, and then secrets, involves her submission. Sex, trust, and an exchange of secrets, it’s a win-win for Jarret. Love isn’t supposed to be part of the equation. Until it is.
If you haven’t read Knotted, stop reading this review and go read that book. Seriously. The backstory laid in that book is heart-wrenching and pivotal to this story. I’m still in awe of what this family has gone through and how well written and fleshed out the backstory and each of the characters in this family is.
Jarret’s evolution over the course of this novel had me wrapped around his finger. His POV was both sexy and emotional. Unfortunately, it was more difficult for me to connect with Maybe. While she seemed both adorably naive of ranch life and independent/determined to pull her weight on the ranch, for me she also came across as incredibly insecure; especially with her behavior at the end of the book. Their connection, though, was electric and the sex scenes smokin’.
While the tone in this installment felt a little lighter, the setup was slightly similar to the first book with our couple using intimacy as a means to gain trust. The twist to their deal is enough that the two books didn’t feel too similar.
My only major hiccup was with the pacing. The setup and suspicions with Jarret and Maybe happen fairly quickly, but the author uses frequent time jumps and little plot movement until much later in the book, which made the middle feel slow.
The end is where all of my love for this book is. It’s an explosion of action, resolution and stellar setup for book three, Booted. Lorne’s book is shaping up to be a one wild ride I can’t wait to take.
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Pam Godwin, lives in the Midwest with her husband, their two children, and a foulmouthed parrot. When she ran away, she traveled fourteen countries across five continents, attended three universities, and married the vocalist of her favorite rock band.
Java, tobacco, and dark romance novels are her favorite indulgences, and might be considered more unhealthy than her aversion to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.
